Whether there’ll be chemistry, whether you’ll feel comfortable, whether you’ll talk easily, whether you’ll find someone who laughs at the same things.

You might wonder if you’ll be the only one coming without company. Or whether the whole thing will be a little awkward. And yes, at first it might be, a little.

A ‘hi’ at the airport. A slightly more reserved smile. A small effort to remember names. A ‘where are you from?’, a ‘have you done a trip like this before?’, or ‘where have you travelled?’.

There’s no need to pretend we’re at ease.

The first hour with strangers can be a little odd. Someone looks at their phone. Another searches for where to sit. Someone smiles without yet knowing what to say, and someone thinks to themselves that maybe it was crazy to come alone.

And then the road begins.

At first the conversation starts with the basics. Where you’re from. What you do. How you ended up here. How you chose this destination.

At some point someone cracks a joke and everyone laughs. Another plays a song that suddenly more people know than you’d expect. Someone pulls a snack from their bag and the first round of sharing begins. Soon someone says ‘let’s stop here for a bit’, and that stop can become the first shared memory.

And that’s how the ice breaks. Not with grand words, but with small moments.

With a chat in the van, with a glance at a landscape. Soon, a photo someone took for someone else. With that laugh you don’t quite know why it started, but you know that from then on something changed.

And that’s one of the loveliest things about trips with strangers. There doesn’t need to be company arranged in advance.

The company can be built on the road.

You might start out as people who simply ended up on the same trip. And a few hours later you’re sharing music, water, chargers, stories, jokes, tiredness, excitement and that feeling of ‘okay, something’s starting to click here’.

It doesn’t always happen the same way, nor immediately. But when it happens, you can tell.

Because suddenly the trip isn’t only yours. It’s something that’s starting to become a shared experience. And maybe that’s the beautiful part.

Because on a trip like this you don’t just get into a van, you step into a small unknown story.

And at first, no one yet knows what will happen.

At first, no one yet knows what will happen.

On the road, people open up more easily

There’s something about the road that makes people open up a little more easily.

Maybe because we’re travelling away from our routine. From work, the same places, the same conversations, the ‘we’ll sort it out’, ‘I don’t have time’, ‘leave it for later’.

Without realising it, you’re a little more available to whatever may happen. You talk more easily, you laugh more spontaneously and you say ‘let’s go’ more quickly to something you might have put off in everyday life.

And when there are people around you in the same frame of mind, something changes.

You don’t need to have known them for years, nor for them to know your whole story, to stand before the same landscape, to tire on the same uphill, to laugh at the same silly thing or to say ‘it was worth it’ at the same moment.

Sometimes, ‘strangers’ are easier than the people you know.

Not because they’re better people. But because they don’t carry your everyday version with them. They don’t know you as ‘the organiser’, ‘the quiet one’, ‘the difficult one’, ‘the one who’s always late’, ‘the one who usually doesn’t say yes’.

They meet you there. On the road. With a backpack, a seat in the van, a coffee in hand, a little tiredness in your eyes and a desire to see something out of the ordinary. And that, sometimes, is liberating.

Because when you travel with people who don’t know you from before, maybe you’re more spontaneous. To speak if you want to speak, to fall silent if you want to fall silent. Somewhere there you realise you don’t travel with strangers simply because you couldn’t find company.

You travel with strangers because, many times, the company you didn’t expect is the one that opens you up the most.

After all, you don’t need to become best friends for it to matter.

Sometimes it’s enough that you shared the journey. A song, a stop, a laugh and a moment that wouldn’t have been the same if you’d lived it alone.

The small group changes the whole trip

It’s one thing to travel with a big group and another with a small group.

In a big group you might have a good time, see things, follow a programme. But sometimes you’re left a little on the outside. You’re one of many. You follow the timings, the predetermined stops, the ‘let’s go, everyone’ and the ‘we leave in ten minutes’.

In a small group, things change. Your voice is heard. Your mood shows. If you get tired, someone will notice. When you get excited about something, you’ll share it more easily. A remark doesn’t get lost in the noise.

And above all, there’s room for the group to bond. Not because it has to. But because the trip allows it.

We share the same van, the same routes and stops. Even the same tiredness at the end of a full day. We share music, photos and jokes that at first weren’t jokes, but quickly became the group’s inside jokes.

And somehow, without realising it, you feel you’re not just on a trip with other people. You’re inside a new group of friends.

It doesn’t necessarily make the trip ‘easier’. Some days can be full, we might wake up earlier or eat something on the go. Others we might get back later. But when you live all of it with a few people, they start to become stories.

On a Roadtrip, the small group isn’t a detail. It’s the heart of the experience.

After all, the point isn’t only to go somewhere. It’s to have people beside you when you get there. To look at a landscape and have someone to say ‘do you see that?’. To come back from a full day and know you didn’t live it alone.

That’s where the difference lies. Not in how many sights you saw.

But in who was beside you when you lived them.

The small group isn’t a detail. It’s the experience.

Landscapes become memories when you share them

A landscape can be impressive on its own. A mountain, a lake or a road opening up before you. A city lit up at night. You can see all of these alone and they’re beautiful.

But something changes when you live them with company. When no one speaks for a while, not because there’s nothing to say, but because the moment needs no explanation. That’s when the image starts to become a memory. Not because you photographed it, but because you lived it with someone.

Because many times you don’t only remember what you saw. You’ll remember who was beside you when you saw it, who said the first remark, who hung back a little to take it in. Who told you ‘look over there’ and showed you something you’d have missed.

And somehow, the place stops being just another place. It becomes a story, the ‘remember when…’ moment.

Remember when we stopped without it being on the programme? Remember when we got tired, hungry, grumbled a little and then saw something that made it all worth it?

These are what come back home with you. Not always the most famous spots. Nor the most perfect photos. But the moments that became shared experiences.

Maybe that’s why trips with strangers can catch you so off guard.

Because you start without knowing anyone. And you come back with people who now live within some of your most vivid memories.

Landscapes become memories when you share them.

It’s not for everyone — and that’s okay

Let’s be honest.

A trip with strangers isn’t for everyone, and it doesn’t have to be.

You might love travelling, but want your own company, your own pace, your own programme, or to have your space. Maybe it doesn’t come easily to you to join a group of people you don’t know. The idea might even tire you — that you’ll share routes, hours, decisions, silences, music, stops and small awkward moments with people you didn’t know until yesterday. And that’s completely okay.

There’s no one right way to travel. There’s only the way that suits you.

If you want absolute quiet, to have full control yourself and to know what’s happening at every moment, then this might not be for you. If the unexpected stresses you a lot and the idea of a small group tires you, then a group roadtrip with strangers probably isn’t what you’re looking for right now.

But if there’s even a little of that curiosity inside you… Or if you think ‘what if it actually turns out lovely?’

If you’re tired of waiting for everyone else’s time off, budgets, moods and ‘yeah, let’s sort it out’ to line up…

If you feel you need a little of the unknown, a group you’ve never met before and a little change from what you live every day…

Well, then it’s worth a try!

Not because everything will be perfect, but because something beautiful might just come of it.

Somewhere on the road, from strangers we become a crew.

Sometimes, strangers are the beginning

Strangers aren’t always the hard part of the trip. They’re the start of it.

They’re the people you didn’t account for when you booked your spot. They weren’t even in your mind when you looked at photos of the destination, when you read the programme, when you thought about what to bring.

And yet, they may be the ones you remember most clearly. Not necessarily as ‘friends for life’.

But as faces that entered a phase of your life and made it more alive.

Someone who sat beside you on the first drive, or who laughed when everything went a little wrong. Someone who, without trying, made a moment more ours. You don’t know these things before you leave.

They don’t fit easily into a programme, you don’t wait for them in order to live them. They just happen.

Somewhere between an airport and a van, on a drive and a stop. Between a conversation that started by chance and a moment when you suddenly feel you belong there a little more.

You set off without knowing anyone.

And for a few days, you find yourself inside the same story with people who until yesterday were strangers.

Even when we return afterwards, something will have stayed.

Because in the end, a trip doesn’t always have to change your life.

Sometimes it’s enough that it wakes you up a little.

To remind you that you can say ‘yes’ before you feel completely ready.
