The 10 Best Things to See in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ljubljana is like a living fairy tale: a picturesque, lively capital with rivers running through it, creating charming little streets — sometimes full of people and nice shops, other times romantic, relaxed promenades for unwinding and calm. Medieval style, a wonderful old town, lovely shops, plenty of cafés and beautiful neighbourhoods that harmoniously blend the old with the new make for a welcoming and lively environment for travellers and residents alike.

10 sights and experiences worth living in Ljubljana

1. The Old Town (Stari Grad)

In the heart of Ljubljana, the Old Town is full of picturesque little streets, historic buildings, charming cafés and restaurants, and lively shops for browsing and souvenirs. It’s worth wandering the narrow alleys to soak up the atmosphere of an old European city — all with a Balkan, medieval air and touches of Renaissance that carry you to another era.

2. Ljubljana Castle (Ljubljanski grad)

The best spot for views and history in 360°. From here you’ll see the whole city, with its rivers and walls. This is where you’ll take the best photos, with all of Ljubljana laid out before you! But then put your phone down and just enjoy the finest view. The best time to be there is just before sunset. That’s when you’ll fall in love with this city!

The best way up to the castle is with Altervan, but if you don’t come with our crew, don’t worry: you can go on foot from the city centre (about a 15-minute uphill walk on a lovely route with wonderful views through picturesque streets), by bike (there are bike lanes and the route is short and pleasant), or alternatively by bus. Just make sure you’re there on time — the sunset view is simply not to be missed!

If you like, you can also take a look inside the castle, where there’s a Castle Museum with exhibitions on medieval and modern life in Ljubljana. And since it often hosts cultural events such as festivals and concerts, it’s worth checking ahead. Beyond the panoramic view of the city and surrounding mountains, it’s also a living space. As the sun sets, the lights embrace it, lending it a mysterious, romantic atmosphere. That’s why it’s the ideal spot to continue your stroll through the city in a different mood.

3. The Central Square (Prešeren Square)

All roads (in Ljubljana) lead to the central square! Carefree and full of life, this square is the hub where countless streets and cobbled alleys converge. It’s the heart of the city and one of the most picturesque spots you’re sure to pass through. It sits in the historic centre, by the river, and all around you’ll see only beautiful buildings — no ugly apartment blocks and no architectural off-notes. There you’ll find an old Franciscan church, distinctive for its pink colour, the national theatre and the Museum of Modernism, and the square’s most iconic feature: a statue of the Slovenian poet France Prešeren (hence the square’s name).

From there one thing is certain: whichever street you choose, it’ll lead you on a lovely route to begin a stroll past small cafés, with street musicians every so often adding a new note to your walk!

And if you get hungry, don’t worry, I’ve got you! The square is full of cafés, restaurants and little patisseries where you can nibble local treats to fuel up and keep strolling, or sit and watch the lovely world go by.

4. The Ljubljanica River

And if you think you’ve had your fill of the city’s view from the castle and have wandered through the city, then wait until you see the picturesque river that runs through it. A walk along the river won’t leave you unmoved — the route there gives off a lovely calm and romantic beauty, even though you’re in the centre of a capital, next to so many busy shops.

There you can be in nature while crossing a city, and every so often you’ll see beautiful bridges crossing the river, like the famous Parliament Bridge, the Fisherman’s Bridge and the Triple Bridge. Here and there along the banks you’ll find picturesque cafés and shops with an idyllic atmosphere for relaxing and photos. If you like, you can even try a canoe ride.

5. The Dragon Bridge (Zmajski Most)

Dragons from legend guarding the city. The most iconic spot in Ljubljana, well worth seeing. It’s one of the city’s most famous and photographed sights — a beautiful bridge ‘guarded’ by striking dragon sculptures on both sides. Beyond the Instagram-worthy photos you can take there, it’s worth being there at sunrise or sunset, when the sky is painted in shades of red and orange, the city lights up with a warm glow and the atmosphere turns magical. The dragon bridge in the centre of Ljubljana is easily accessible and close to most of the city’s sights. You can combine a visit to the bridge with a trip to the Old Town and Ljubljana Castle.

6. Tivoli Park

It’s not just a park, it’s a serene escape for locals and visitors alike. There’s a small café, a little pond, paths and plenty of benches for a picnic, relaxing or even meditating. It’s definitely worth a stroll — and if you’re as lucky as we were, you might even see deer. A unique experience that shows how nature can live right beside the city without borders. The ideal time to visit? Morning or afternoon, when the sunlight creates wonderful colours and shadows.

7. A stroll through the Central Market (Ljubljana Central Market)

Ljubljana Central Market is one of the city’s most vibrant and genuine spots, and at the same time the best way to taste Ljubljana in a single stroll. A walk there is an authentic experience, both for food lovers (like me) and for getting a taste of the local culture. From fresh fruit and vegetables to local cheeses, honeys and traditional sausages.

Here you don’t just shop — you taste, meet people, ask, learn, smile and eat your fill. Best time? Early in the morning, when the atmosphere is ideal! You won’t regret it.

8. Local flavours — eat like a local

If you’re the ‘try everything’ type, then seek out small restaurants or open-air markets — that’s where the authentic experiences hide. And yes, everything pairs with a cold local beer (or several, since you’re not the one driving the van).

You definitely can’t leave without trying Kranjska klobasa — a traditional juicy sausage; jota — a hearty stew of cabbage, beans, potatoes and smoked meat; Štruklji — traditional filled rolls of dough, often with cheese, apples or other fruit; Idrija žlikrofi — traditional filled dumplings served with cream or butter and herbs, often as a side to meat dishes.

And for dessert: if you travel there in summer, with a little searching you’ll find ice cream — better even than Italian gelato — in countless flavours; and for something more local, Potica — a rolled dough usually filled with ground walnut in its most classic version, but also in variations with honey, raisins, almonds, chocolate, carob, and even savoury versions with pork fillings.

Of course, you’ll also find cosier spots for vegetarian options, where everyone leaves satisfied.

Don’t underestimate the flavours you can try in Ljubljana. After all, in the Balkans we know good food — and this is our neighbourhood!

9. Metelkova — the alternative soul of Ljubljana

Old barracks transformed by artists and activists into an underground artistic community — a living canvas of resistance, freedom and creation, full of street art, cultural events, alternative bars and open-air concerts. A place bursting with colour, its vibe maybe a little reminiscent of Berlin in a more Balkan version. By day, you can admire every colourful piece of graffiti, take photos and chat with locals. By night, though, Metelkova transforms: genuine underground parties, local DJs, rhythm and live music to dance to until dawn. In other words, it’s the most authentic and at the same time most unpredictable part of the city. And don’t be afraid of the chaos — it’s simply part of its character!

In a single phrase: art, history and vibes in an explosive combination.

10. A visit to Lake Bled — a lake straight out of a fairy tale

Just 45 minutes from Ljubljana, Lake Bled is the kind of place you say can’t possibly be real. A landscape with a crystal-clear lake, lush green mountains all around, and in the middle… a little island with a church — this setting surely sprang from a fairy tale. If it’s summer, a dip in the lake is definitely worth it, or simply walk around the lake with a piece of the legendary Bled Cream Cake in hand.

The Balkans — explore your neighbourhood

In our neighbourhood, the Balkans, there are places worth discovering before you start rushing off to the other side of the world. So many different cultures and yet such similar flavours, music and mindsets. Slovenia — and especially Ljubljana — shows you that the most authentic experiences aren’t always far away.

Pack your bags — or better yet, fill a backpack — and start the journey!

So maybe it’s time to see the Balkans, to discover how many little gems are hidden in our neighbourhood. Ljubljana is one of them! A city you’ll fall in love with, however unexpected.

With love for travel, roadtrips and adventure.
