Part of the Dinaric Alps, Zlatibor lies in Serbia and is a mountainous region covering roughly 1,000 sq. km. According to one theory its name comes from ‘Zlatar’, meaning gold, as it is home to a very rare species of white pine known as the golden pine. It is a tourist resort in both the winter and the summer months.
What to see in Zlatibor
You’ll have the chance to admire a landscape of unparalleled natural beauty, surrounded by lakes, rivers and plains. On the road, the stunning scenery will leave you speechless, so don’t forget to take plenty of photos.
What’s more, in the centre of the town of Zlatibor there is a fairly large lake, which you’ll see frozen over if you travel in winter — a truly impressive sight, though it loses none of its beauty in the other months.
And of course you’ll stroll through the lovely squares and shops, stopping to rest over a hot chocolate.
Leaving Zlatibor, just a few kilometres away lies Drvengrad (a wooden town), a village quite unlike anything you’ve seen before. It is the ideal, fairy-tale village of the renowned director Emir Kusturica, inspired by the filming of ‘Life Is a Miracle’. Unique, doll-like wooden houses; streets and squares with one-of-a-kind names such as Federico Fellini, Bruce Lee, Ernesto Che Guevara, Nikola Tesla and Maradona; and a life-size statue of Johnny Depp, who attended the unveiling in person. Careful! In this village you can find almost everything… except Coca-Cola, which is banned outright! Finally, as you head down from the picturesque village, don’t miss the Sargan 8 a railway line whose route traces the number 8 — something unique in the entire world. In fact, scenes from the film ‘Life Is a Miracle’ , while the train that runs the route keeps its old, stately appearance with well-kept wooden seats, wood stoves, steam locomotives and so on.
